Classical Music and Learning…..

I just read an interesting article on classical music and learning I had to share with you. Enjoy!

Dr. Georgi Lozanov was one of the first people to discover that music has a measurable effect on the brain, on a deep emotional level. He figured out specific STYLES of music can actually make your brain MORE receptive to learning.

Here’s the kicker: Lozanov ALSO discovered you can’t simply turn on ANY classical music to get the effect.

The MEMORY CONSOLIDATION phase is when you’re reviewing material you’ve just learned — And want to RETAIN that information in your brain. During this stage, you want to study to what’s known as a Passive Concert — a melodic, baroque piece of classical music – which helps CONSOLIDATE the information into your long-term memory.

I started a digital project on Learning Styles…..and guess what?

I decided to do my digital project on the Prezi platform as I am not familiar with it and wanted to experience something new.

I have to admit it was initially overwhelming as I know that being artistic is not my forte’.

As part of my PIDP 3250 Instructional Strategies course one of my assignments is to create a digital project. It is my understanding that this will be made available to the entire class.

This is considered a self-directed assignment. Hmmm …where to begin. After many thoughts and ideas I decided to go to the “pay it forward” section of our course forum . Thank goodness I did because it really did help!

Once I got started I realized that if I just planned it right I could do it.

I thought that the first thing I should do was research as much about my topic as I could. I also thought I should watch some You Tubes videos on how to use the Prezi platform.

I decided to follow the following model:

  1. Identify project
  2. Vision project
  3. Draft project
  4. Build project
  5. Test project
  6. Change project
  7. Submit project

But wait… Something that through me for a loop happened. An insightful comment was made on our class forum.

Are Learning Styles a Myth?

OMG!!!! What is this. Did I just get my whole project wrong. What do I do now. Should I start from scratch….so I started thinking if  the answers to my guiding questions captured some of the best practices for my Digital project. I think they did.

I do think learning styles are here to stay and so my digital project will still be helpful. It does warrant some tweaking to at least address the myth concept in some meaningful way. Its a work in progress but I hope the students find it useful.

I look forward to seeing the other digital projects.
